Pinterest Challenge Week 34

My sweet little Quinn turned 6 on the 11th of August and for her Birthday she wanted a Hello Kitty cake.  My sister in Vancouver has her own cake business so I asked her to make me one and mail it to me, but thanks to Canada Post on the night before her party I was in my kitchen preparing myself to make a Hello Kitty (the things I do for my girls).  I was actually very please with how it turned out and I did get some sleep that night so it was a miracle.  I used pinterest to find pictures of Hello Kitty and some fondant figurines.  You can check out Laura's Sweet Designs on Pinterest here, her stuff is amazing!

Pinterest Challenge Week 33

I have been away on Vacation for a couple weeks, well actually I am still away on Vacation but I wanted to share this quick little tip.  I had seen all over Pinterest that you can make your own natural Peanut Butter so I thought I should give it a try.  I didn't have many but thought that was good because then I wouldn't waste much if it didn't turn out.  I shelled the peanuts and simply put them into the food processor.

I started with a pulse to get everything mixed and crumbled then on to low and eventually high.  I had to keep stopping it to clean the sides and mix it, mostly because I didn't have a lot in there.  Now my bug tip is to give it time.  It seems to take a very long time and a couple of times I thought it was done but I kept letting it go.  All of a sudden the peanuts will release their natural oil and it will become very creamy and smooth, and there you have it all natural peanut butter that doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

Pinterest Challenge Week 32

I saw this really neat idea on Pinterest and I thought it would be really cute to do to the girls fans to pretty them up.  White fans are so plain and boring I thought adding a little colour would be great.  It was easy to do.  The blue/green only needed one coat but the pink needed two and probably could have used another coat but Quinn really wanted to see it in her room.

When the fans are on you can see the tint of colour on the blades still.  I'm really happy with how these turned out, as are my girls.

Pinterest Challenge Week 31

I love to spend time on Pinterest drooling over all these well organized homes, all the cute little containers and clean spaces that are free of clutter, it's what I dream of for my house.  Slowly I am making it happen, I don't expect miracles and I don't expect it to happen over night, I take it one room, one drawer, one cupboard at a time.  So this week I decided to re-arrange the cabinet in the master bathroom.  It was messy and I couldn't find what I needed, plus it seemed to be full of stuff that I didn't even  need.

As most of my organizing projects begin I took a little trip to the dollar store and got some containers to keep all the like items together and tidy.  I then took everything out of the cabinet, I find starting with a clean slate always works best for me.  I took two plastic containers and organized all my manicure/pedicure items into one and my spa items into another.  I hung removable hooks on the door to store my flat iron and blowdryer so they are easy for me to grab but out of the way.  I made sure that anything going back in was something that I would actually use and that it had a very specific place.

I am very happy with the results, I love that another little space has been checked off in my quest to clean and organize my home.  Oh Pinterest you never fail to motivate and inspire :)

Looking at all the different nails on Pinterest always inspires me to paint my nails and try new things on them.  I have a girlfriend over on slugssnailsandpuppy-dogtails who has done some pretty cool things with her nails, but mine never seem to work out.  Even when I just paint them the paint seems to be chipping off by the next day.   With my girls going to their Dads for an entire 7 days I decided to try something different with my nails.  During the winter my parents live in Florida and my Mom had picked me up some nail polish stripes but I had yet to try them. (the price difference between buying them in the USA compared to Canada was crazy!)  Well this week seemed like the perfect time to try them out.

They were really easy to put on and I liked that I didn't have to wait for anything to dry.  I was a little hesitant and careful with them at first, I just didn't believe that they would stick, but trust me they stick!  It has been a week and I do have a few chips out of them but nothing compared to how my regular polish would be by this time.  Plus I think where the chips are I had some little folds in the stickers so that's why they chipped.  I am looking forward to trying these out again and I think they would even last while I have the girls here!

About a week ago I took the girls camping, it had been 3 years since we had gone and let me tell you, it was so much fun!  We were able to just sit back and relax and enjoy each others company.  I had pinned lots of things for us to do while camping but of course we didn't do them :) we just did what we wanted and nothing was planned.  One night the girls and I came up with an idea and I have no idea if it was something I had seen on pinterest or not but either way it is genius and the girls loved it.

We took their glow sticks that they had been playing with and put them into a water bottle full of water.  They then used them as their lanterns to lead us to the washrooms before bed and to light up the tent to play for a little while.  They had a blast with them and I know it is something we will be doing again.

For those of you who follow me on Pinterest know that I have been pinning a lot of healthy meals and clean eating.  The girls and I have always eaten healthy but I have decided to challenge myself and to slowly move us over to clean eating only.  I know that it is going to take a while for the changes but that is how I have planned it out.  If you jump in completely then you are setting yourself up to fail .... it's all about baby steps! I have been doing lots of research and getting lots of ideas off pinterest.  I love taking all of these ideas and turning them into something that works for me.  Here is one of my favorite salads.

Aisley put aside her chocolate cake and tucked right into my salad

My Salad:
Quinoa
Broccoli
Cucumber
Tomato
Six Beans
Carrots
Feta Cheese

My Dressing:
3 tbsp. olive oil
1 tbsp. balsamic vinegar
little salt and pepper

I do not use all this dressing on this salad, I always have a container of this dressing made and ready to go, these is just the ratio of oil to vinegar that I use.

Pinterest Challenge Week 27

I have been spending a lot of time in my kitchen and therefore have been working on organizing it to help me be more efficient.  I had one cupboard in particular that was driving me nuts.  It seemed to be just full of opened bags and there was no order to the shelves.

The first step was a trip to the dollar store where I found some great glass containers ranging form $1 to $2 each.  Once I had washed everything I pulled everything out of the cupboard and threw out what had gone bad (happily not much) and started planning out what sizes I needed for each ingredient.  Once everything had been moved over I planned out how I wanted the cupboard, everything now has a place and it is in order.

I am so happy with the way this turned out and I can tell you it has made a difference with my cooking and baking, its nice to be able to open a cupboard and see/know what I have.

Pinterest Challenge Week 26

I have been making Granola Bars for my kids for a while and they love them, they are way better then the store bought ones.  I have one recipe that I am faithful to, but plan on trying some new ones soon.  I didn't get it from pinterest, my sisters friends shared it with us, but I think it should be on pinterest so I think it counts for this challenge.  If you make them please comment below, I would love to hear what you think of them.

Granola Bars:
2 cups rolled oats
3/4 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 cup wheat germ
1/4 cup ground flax seed
3/4 cup raisins (optional)
1 cup flour (all purpose, spelt, whole wheat)
3/4 tsp ground cinnamon
3/4 tsp salt
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1/2 cup honey
1 egg beaten
2 tsp vanilla extract

now it is time for you to customize your bars.  add anything you like, for example coconut, figs, dates, chocolate chips, nuts, dried fruit etc

grease pan (9x13) and add the ingredients, bake at 350 for 30-35minutes (the edges will turn golden brown) Let the bars cool for about 5 minutes before removing them from the pan.  I usually put all the bars in a Ziploc in the freezer.  They thaw really fast (perfect for school lunches) or a couple seconds in the microwave and they are ready to eat if you need them right away.

Pinterest Challenge Week 25

Wow can you believe it is August already and I didn't do one single post in July ... so you know what's coming right .... yup you guessed it, get ready for the big catch-up of all the things that I've been up to.  Ready ... Set .....

A while back I made a crust less quiche.  I roughly followed the recipe from here and I mean roughly.  I used whole wheat flour and as my extra ingredients I used fresh spinach, mushrooms, red peppers and cheese.  When I cooked it the flour worked its way down to the bottom of the pan so there is kind of a crust.

Have you ever noticed that they only sell spinach in huge bunches or containers.  I eat a lot of spinach but have a hard time getting through it all sometimes before it expires.  I found a little tip, don't know where I saw it, all you have to do is take your fresh spinach and put it in the food processor with a little bit  of water and blend.  I then took the liquid and put it in ice cube trays and froze it.  Now I have ready to go spinach cubes for my smoothies.
